Taxonomy
Desmathyus pinensis was named by Matthew (1907). Its type locality is AMNH Rosebud 16, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in South Dakota.

It was recombined as Hesperhys pinensis by Wright (1998).

Prothero 2015[Same as for genus] Smaller hesperhyine with a long narrow rostrum and gracile zygomatic arches and orbital regions, and smaller less robust and in ated cheek teeth (in contrast to Hesperhys); P3 has a large lingual cingulum which may develop a protocone; i1 and i2 are dorsoventrally shallow at the base; narrow but deep plesiochoanal chamber.
