Taxonomy
Didelphys valens was named by Lambe (1908). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Calf Creek, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Cypress Hills Formation of Canada.

It was recombined as Didelphis valens by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Peratherium valens by Russell (1934) and Russell (1984); it was recombined as Herpetotherium valens by Korth (1994), Eberle and Storer (1995) and Korth et al. (2022).
