Metaconularia was named by Foerste (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 1016].

It was assigned to Conulariinae by Bayer et al. (1956); to Scyphozoa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Conulariidae by Leme et al. (2008), Miller et al. (2022).
