Montezumellidae was named by Ossó and Domínguez (2019) [Made available with publication of Montezumelloidea by principle of coordination]. Its type is Montezumella.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Cancroidea by Ossó and Domínguez (2013).

It was assigned to Cancroidea by Schweitzer and Feldmann (2019); and to Montezumelloidea by Ossó and Domínguez (2019), Ossó and Domínguez (2021).
