Taxonomy
Xenotherium unicum was named by Douglass (1905) ["genotype"]. Its type locality is McCarty's Mountain, which is in a Chadronian wet floodplain tuff in the Chadron Formation of Montana. It is the type species of Epoicotherium.

It was recombined as Epoicotherium unicum by Simpson (1927), Hay (1930), Scott (1941), Rose (1978) and Tabrum and Nichols (2001).
