Putorius vison was named by Schreber (1777). It is extant.

It was recombined as Mustela vison by Gidley (1913), Hay (1914), Hay (1923), Hay (1930), Hall (1936), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Mead and Mead (1989), Marmi et al. (2004); it was recombined as Lutreola vison by Matthew (1915); it was recombined as Neogale vison by Patterson et al. (2021); it was recombined as Neovison vison by Baryshnikov (2009), Eshelman et al. (2025).
