Taxonomy
Eusmilus sicarius was named by Sinclair and Jepsen (1927). Its type locality is Pinnacles Overlook, which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Hoplophoneus sicarius by Morea (1975), Bryant (1984), Bryant (1996), Barrett (2016).
