Taxonomy
Canis africanus was named by Pohle (1928). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Olduvai Bed II, which is in a Calabrian fluvial horizon in the Olduvai Formation of Tanzania.
It was recombined as Xenocyon africanus by Rook (1994), Bartolini-Lucenti and Spassov (2022).
