Kelenkura was named by Barasoain et al. (2022) [Etymology: The generic name derives from the Mapudungun (Mapuche) word “këlen”, meaning tail, and “kura”, meaning rock, in reference to this taxon being the earliest to develop a “fully modern” caudal tube (completely fused and ornamented).]. Its type is Kelenkura castroi.
