Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
S. J. Godfrey and O. Lambert 2023A small odontocete characterized by a series of highly autapomorphic features: anteroposteriorly long postglenoid process being projected far anteriorly and making the ventral margin of the squamosal highly concave in lateral view; posterior process of periotic being broadly expanded posterodorsally and being exposed on the outer surface of the basicranium between squamosal and exoccipital; broad facial sulcus along the whole medial surface of the posterior process of the periotic; markedly reduced involucrum of the tympanic bulla in both lateral and ventral views; depressed area on dorsal margin of involucrum for the accessory ossicle; voluminous sigmoid process of the tympanic bulla directed anteromedially in dorsal view; greatly inflated accessory ossicle of the tympanic bulla being anteriorly as long as the anterior process of the periotic; and lateral and medial margins of the posterior process of the tympanic bulla wrapping around the lateral and medial margins of the posterior process of the periotic. It further differs from other odontocetes in the following unique combination of characters: dorsal margin of the zygomatic process of the squamosal being markedly convex; extremely deep posterior part of the tympanosquamosal recess; tip of anterior process of periotic being slender and pointed; anterior bullar facet being present; endocranial opening of the facial canal being lateral to the spiral cribriform tract; suprameatal fossa being well defined on the periotic; absence of a lateral furrow on the tympanic bulla; and tubercule of the malleus being longer than the head.
