Protogonodon stenognathus was named by Matthew (1897). Its type specimen is AMNH 3198 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Loxolophus pentacus by Van Valen (1978); it was recombined as Loxolophus stenognathus by Williamson and Lucas (1993), Williamson (1996).
