Taxonomy
Pliomastodon cosoensis was named by Schultz (1937). Its type locality is Coso Mountains (CIT 284), which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in California.

It was recombined as Mammut cosoensis by Shoshani and Tassy (1996).
