Taxonomy
Heloderma was named by Wiegmann (1829). It is extant. Its type is Trachyderma horridum. It is the type genus of Helodermatidae. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).

It was assigned to Helodermatidae by Galbreath (1953), Kuhn (1966), Estes (1983), Carroll (1988); to Helodermidae by Cope (1875), Hay (1930), Frank and Ramus (1996); to Varanoidea by Lee and Caldwell (2000); and to Monstersauria by Yi and Norell (2013).
