Taxonomy
Hydrochoerus perturbidus was named by Ameghino (1889).
It was recombined as Protohydrochoerus perturbidus by Roverto (1914) and Rovereto (1914); it was recombined as Chapalmatherium perturbidum by Prado et al. (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Phugatherium cataclisticum by Deschamps et al. (2012) and Vucetich et al. (2014).
