Protokateretes rectangulum was named by Zhao et al. (2024). Its type specimen is NIGP203319, an exoskeleton (body), and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Burmese amber, Kachin amber (NIGP collection), which is in a Cenomanian terrestrial amber in Myanmar.
