Microtus quasiater was named by Miller (1896) [named as a subspecies of Arvicola pinetorum by Coues 1874; raised to species level; combination retained by van der Meulen 1978, Hall 1981].
It was recombined as Pitymys quasiater by Repenning (1983), Repenning and Grady (1988).
