Protolabis longiceps was named by Matthew (1909). Its type locality is Kennesaw, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Pawnee Creek Beds Formation of Colorado.
It was recombined as Miolabis longiceps by Frick and Taylor (1971), Kelly (1992), Honey et al. (1998).
