Taxonomy
Oxydactylus gibbi was named by Loomis (1911). Its type specimen is YPM 10328, a partial skull (the palate and lower jaws with complete dentition, except that the third molar is lacking in each jaw), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Big Muddy Creek, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in Wyoming.
It was recombined as Miotylopus gibbi by McKenna (1966), McKenna and Love (1972), Prothero (1996) and Honey et al. (1998).

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
C. Stock 1935 (Dyseotylopus migrans) | Larger than known species of Prebrotherium, but similar to this genus in slenderness of skull. Maxillary fossa broad. Molars compressed transversely and higher crowned than in Prebrotherium or in Paratylopus. Outer walls of molars flatter and styles distinctly less prominent than in these genera. Mesostyle present, but does not extend full depth of crown. | |
E. M. Schlaikjer 1935 (Miotylopus bathygnathus) | Inferior premolars simple. P1 separated from the canine by a long diastema which is subequal to that which separates Pi from P2. Styles on inner walls of inferior molars absent or feebly developed. Ramus narrow and relatively deep. Infraorbital foramen above the paracone of M . Interorbital breadth across frontals very
great. (See Plate 39). | |
D. R. Prothero 1996 | Medium-sized species of Miotylopus. Length of P2-M3 = 71-79 mm. M3 more elongate relative to the size of the animal than in any other
species of Miotylopus |
