Crocuta inexpectata was named by Cope (1895).
It was recombined as Uncia inexpectata by Cope (1899); it was recombined as Felis inexpectatus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Felis inexpectata by Simpson (1941), Slaughter (1966), Kurtén (1976); it was synonymized subjectively with Acinonyx studeri by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Adams (1979); it was recombined as Miracinonyx inexpectatus by Van Valkenburgh et al. (1990), Morgan and Seymour (1997), Eshelman et al. (2025).
