Tetralophodon barbouri was named by Osborn (1921) [type of subgenus "Morrillia" of Osborn 1924b].
It was recombined as Tetralophodon (Morrillia) barbouri by Osborn (1924); it was recombined as Stegomastodon barbouri by Madden (1986), Dalquest and Schultz (1992); it was recombined as Morrillia barbouri by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005).
