Taxonomy
Oromys aesopi was named by Leidy (1853) [genotype; also said to be 1858]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hydrochoerus aesopi by Leidy (1856), Leidy (1860), Leidy (1869), Trouessart (1880), Cope (1883), Winge (1887), Rogers (1896), Hay (1902), Hay (1923), Winge (1924), Allen (1926), Winge (1941), Mones (1975), Gillette and Colbert (1976), Mones (1976) and Mones (1976); it was recombined as Neochoerus aesopi by Mones (1984), Mones (1986) and Mones (1991).

Synonyms
  • Hydrochoerus holmesi was named by Simpson (1928). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sabertooth Cave, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Florida.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Neochoerus aesopi by Mones (1984) and Mones (1991).
  • Hydrochoerus robustus was named by Leidy (1886). Its type specimen is ANSP 12109, a mandible (left ramus of mandible plus furst molar), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Jalapa, which is in a Pleistocene channel sandstone in Nicaragua.

    It was recombined as Neochoerus robustus by Kraglievich (1930) and Mones (1975); it was synonymized subjectively with Neochoerus aesopi by Mones (1991) and Lucas et al. (2008).
