Cyphaspis ceratophthalmoides was named by Richter (1913).

It was recombined as Novakaspis ceratophthalmoides by Pribyl (1947); it was recombined as Otarion (Otarion) ceratophthalmoides by Kielan (1954); it was recombined as Otarion ceratophthalmoides by Ficner and Havlicek (1978); it was recombined as Otarion (Cyphaspis) ceratophthalmoides by Pribyl and Vanek (1981).
