Taxonomy
Pseudaelurus thinobates was named by Macdonald (1948).

It was synonymized subjectively with Nimravides catocopis by Martin and Schultz (1975); it was recombined as Nimravides thinobates by Kitts (1958), Baskin (1981), Rothwell (2003), Antón et al. (2013).
