Otarion (Otarion) lacrimarum was named by Pribyl and Vanek (1981). Its type specimen is JVC2567, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cyphaspis lacrimura by Basse and Lemke (1996); it was corrected as Otarion (Otarion) lacrimurum by Flick (1999); it was recombined as Cyphaspis lacrimara by Lemke (2020).
