Phacops (Acaste) downingiae spinosus was named by Salter (1864) [Phacops (Acaste) Downingiae var δ spinosus].

It was recombined as Acaste (Acastella) spinosa by Richter and Richter (1954); it was recombined as Acastella spinosa by Shergold (1967).
