Its type locality is Thomas Farm, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial sandstone/claystone in the Alachua Formation of Florida. It is the type species of Nothokemas.
It was recombined as Nothokemas floridanus by White (1947), Maglio (1966), McKenna (1966), Patton (1967), Patton (1969), Honey et al. (1998), Albright (1999) and Marriott et al. (2022).

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
G. G. Simpson 1932 | About the size of O. brachyodontus. P1-P2 diastema very long. P very large, completely two-rooted, with strong continuous internal cingulum. P3 with inner crescent likewise complete, but not much expanded. P2 also relatively large and completely two-rooted. P2 to P4 each with increasingly prominent antero-internal and posterior ( or posterointernal) folds. | |
T. E. White 1940 (Paratylopus grandis) | A large species, one sixth larger than P. cameloides (Wortman). | |
T. E. White 1947 (Nothokemas grandis) | A large hornless artiodactyl with unreduced nasals;
lacrymal vacuity as large as the orbit; rostrum high, narrow, and moderately elongate; postorbital bar complete; teeth slightly more hypso- dont than Syndyoceras; premolars and molars similar to those of Pro- toceras; internal crescents of the upper molars and the external cres- cents of the lower molars separate to the base of the tooth; mesostyle of the molars rudimentary; heel of third lower molar single lobed; orbit and internal nares posterior to third upper molar; cuboid and navicular probably separate. | |
K. Marriott et al. 2022 | Largest species of Nothokemas, about 20% larger than N. hidalgensis, with a more robust diastema and symphysis than N. hidalgensis. The p3 and p4 are relatively slender compared to N. hidalgensis. |
