Taxonomy
Octacodon was named by Marsh (1894). Its type is Octacodon valens.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heptacodon by Macdonald (1956), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Kron and Manning (1998).

It was assigned to Anthracotheriinae by Hay (1902); and to Bothriodontinae by Scott (1940).
