Testudo burgenlandica was named by Bachmayer and Mlynarski (1983). Its type specimen is NHMW 1981/0024/0001, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kohfidisch, which is in a MN 11 terrestrial horizon in Austria.
