Taxonomy
Canis brachypus was named by Cope (1881). Its type specimen is AMNH 8140, a partial skeleton (skull and lower jaws plus most of the postcranial skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Uva Breaks, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in the Marsland Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Cynodesmus brachypus by Scott (1895), Matthew (1907), Cope and Matthew (1915); it was recombined as Osbornodon brachypus by Wang (1994), Wang and Tedford (1996), Wang et al. (2008).
