Marmota mexicana was named by Wilson (1949) [also but incorrectly said to be 1948].
It was synonymized subjectively with Paenemarmota barbouri by Repenning (1962), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Voorhies (1988); it was recombined as Paenemarmota mexicana by Dalquest and Mooser (1980), Nelson and Miller (1990), Martin (1998).
