Taxonomy

Palaeosyops fontinalis was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Limnohyus fontinalis by Cope (1873) and Cope (1884); it was recombined as Limnohyops fontinalis by Earle (1891), Earle (1892), Roger (1896), Trouessart (1898) and Hay (1902).

Synonyms

Eometarhinus huerfanensis was named by Osborn (1919) [genotype]. Its type specimen is AMNH 17412, a partial skull (anterior portion of a skull), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Huerfano I, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Huerfano Formation of Colorado. It is the type species of Eometarhinus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosyops fontinalis by Robinson (1966), Mader (1998), Gunnell and Yarborough (2000).
