Sinotragus occidentalis was named by Geraads et al. (2002). Its type specimen is MTA 1894 , a skull (a relatively complete skull, lacking the anterior part of the muzzle, most of the teeth, and with a poorly preserved cranial bas), and it is a 3D body fossil.
