Taxonomy
Hypolagus mexicanus was named by Miller and Carranza-Castaneda (1982). Its type locality is Rancho Viejo, which is in a Blancan floodplain claystone/ash in the Rancho Viejo Beds Formation of Mexico.
It was recombined as Pewelagus mexicanus by White (1988).
