Phenacops was named by Matthew (1909). Its type is Phenacops incerta.

It was synonymized subjectively with Didelphodus by McKenna et al. (1962), Van Valen (1966), Van Valen (1967), Wilson (1985), Lopatin (2006).

It was assigned to Didelphodontinae by Hay (1930).
