Taxonomy
Platygonus vetus was named by Leidy (1882) [it is not clear from Leidy's description whether the type specimen represents one or two individuals]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Platygonus vetus Type Locality, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial gravel in Pennsylvania.
