Taxonomy
Pogonodon davisi was named by Merriam (1906). Its type specimen is UCMP 789, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hoplophoneus davisi by Matthew (1910); it was recombined as Nimravus davisi by Fremd (1994); it was synonymized subjectively with Pogonodon platycopis by Bryant (1996).

J. C. Merriam 1906Skull large, sagittal crest very high and thin, brain case small. Dentition 3/, 1/, 3/, 1/. Third upper incisors relatively large. Upper canines large but not greatly compressed laterally. P2 very small, one-rooted. P4 without deuterocone, with incipient protostyle, not exceeding the superior canine in antero-posterior diameter. M1 small, narrow transversely, without distinct internal or protocone lobe.
