Taxonomy
Hesperocyon wilsoni was named by Gustafson (1986). Its type specimen is TMM 40504-126, a partial skull (partial skull and mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Airstrip (TMM 40504), which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Capote Mountain Tuff Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Hesperocyon.
It was recombined as Prohesperocyon wilsoni by Wang (1994), Wang and Tedford (1996) and Wang et al. (2008).
