Taxonomy
Dicotyles serus was named by Cope (1877). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sappa Creek, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in Kansas. It is the type species of Prosthennops.

It was recombined as Tayassu serus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Prosthennops serus by Gidley (1904), Colbert (1935), Wright (1989), Wright (1998), Hulbert and Whitmore (2006) and Prothero (2021).
