Alce gigantea was named by Blumenbach (1799).
It was synonymized subjectively with Alces (Megaceros) fossilis by Allen (1895); it was recombined as Megaloceros giganteus by Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Gentry (2010), Vislobokova (2013).
