Protocamelus virginiensis was named by Leidy (1873).
It was recombined as Procamelus virginiensis by Leidy (1873), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Auchenia virginiensis by Leidy (1892); it was recombined as Camelops virginiensis by Hay (1929); it was recombined as Tanupolama virginiensis by Simpson (1930); it was considered a nomen dubium by Webb (1974), Dalquest and Schultz (1992).
