Visbylites was named by Bondarenko (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u S Ldov-u]. Its type is Plasmopora stella.

It was assigned to Tabulata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plasmoporidae by Wang et al. (2020).
