Taxonomy
Prolimnocyon robustus was named by Matthew and Granger (1915).

It was synonymized subjectively with Paeneprolimnocyon mordax by Van Valen (1969), Delson (1971); it was recombined as Prototomus robustus by Gingerich and Deutsch (1989), Polly (1993), Polly (1996), Gunnell (1998).
