Lutra (Satherium) ingens was named by Gazin (1934). Its type specimen is CIT 1167 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Satherium piscinarium by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Satherium ingens by Bjork (1970), Bjork (1973) and Kelly (1994).
