Erguitaia rugosa was named by Case et al. (2001). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Eutaw Formation, Georgia, which is in a Santonian/Santonian marine sandstone/mudstone in the Eutaw Formation of Georgia.
It was recombined as Asflapristis rugosa by Begat et al. (2022).
