Eucastor was named by Allen (1877) [named as subgenus by Leidy 1858; first raised to genus level]. It is not extant. Its type is Castor (Eucastor) tortus.
It was assigned to Castoridae by Allen (1877), Hay (1902), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Castoroidinae by Rybczynski (2007); and to Nothodipoidini by Korth (2007), Korth (2008).
