Taxonomy
Didymictis tenuis was named by Simpson (1935). Its type locality is Gidley Quarry, which is in a Torrejonian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Protictis tenuis by MacIntyre (1966); it was recombined as Simpsonictis tenuis by MacIntyre (1962), Gingerich and Winkler (1985), Fox and Youzwyshyn (1994) and Meehan and Wilson (2002).
