Taxonomy
Citellus matthewi was named by Black (1963). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Aphelops Draw Quarries, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Snake Creek Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Otospermophilus matthewi by Barnosky (1986); it was recombined as Spermophilus matthewi by Shotwell (1968), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Korth (1994).
