Taxonomy

Sphenocoelus uintensis was named by Osborn (1895) [genotype]. It is the type species of Sphenocoelus.

Synonyms

Tanyorhinus blairi was named by Cook (1926) [genotype]. Its type specimen is DMNS 541, 542, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Tanyorhinus.

It was recombined as Dolichorhinus blairi by Tedford et al. (1987); it was recombined as Sphenocoelus blairi by Mader (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Sphenocoelus uintensis by Mader (2008) and Mihlbachler (2008).
Tanyorhinus bridgeri was named by Cook (1926). Its type specimen is DMNS 479, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Dolichorhinus bridgeri by Tedford et al. (1987); it was recombined as Sphenocoelus bridgeri by Mader (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Sphenocoelus uintensis by Mader (2008) and Mihlbachler (2008).
Tanyorhinus harundivorax was named by Cook (1926) [Original spelling was actually Tanyorhinus harundivorax]. Its type specimen is DMNH 552, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Dolichorhinus harundivoras by Tedford et al. (1987); it was recombined as Sphenocoelus harundivorax by Mader (1998); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mihlbachler (2008); it was synonymized subjectively with Sphenocoelus uintensis by Mader (2008).
