Taxonomy
Mephitis interrupta was named by Rafinesque (1820). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Spilogale putorius by McCarley (1952), Hall (1981), Lee and Modi (1983), Baskin (1998); it was recombined as Spilogale interrupta by Gray (1865), Merriam (1890), Hay (1902), Hall (1936), Hibbard (1955), Miller and Kellogg (1955), McDonough et al. (2022).
