Subhyracodon kewi was named by Stock (1933). Its type locality is Kew Quarry, which is in a Whitneyan/Arikareean terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Sespe Formation of California.
It was synonymized subjectively with Subhyracodon occidentalis by Lander (1983).
